Il British Cartoon Archive raccoglie più di 130.000 vignette e disegni prodotti da artisti inglesi, molti dei quali dediti alla satira politica.

Tra i più interessanti disegnatori di vignette umoristiche a sfondo socio-politico si ricordano David Low (1981-1963), Carl Giles (1916-1995), Michael Cummings (1919-1997).

Tutti i disegni possono essere consultati gratuitamente sul database online. E’ disponibile anche una pagina dedicata alle biografie degli artisti.

The British Cartoon Archive (BCA) is located in Canterbury at the University of Kent’s Templeman Library. It has a library, archive, gallery, and is dedicated to the history of British cartooning over the last two hundred years.

The BCA holds more than 130,000 original editorial, socio-political, and pocket cartoons, supported by large collections of comic strips, newspaper cuttings, books and magazines. The collection of original artwork dates back to 1904 and includes work by W.K.Hasleden, Will Dyson, Strube, David Low, Vicky, Emmwood, Michael Cummings, Ralph Steadman, Mel Calman, Nicholas Garland, Chris Riddell, Carl Giles, Martin Rowson, and Steve Bell, amongst many others.

All cartoons on our online database are catalogued and can be examined in detail via zoom technology.

Connected Histories: ricerca integrata su risorse digitali di storia inglese (1500 – 1900)

Connected Histories è un nuovo strumento che consente di condurre ricerche integrate su 15 risorse digitali che contengono documenti, fonti primarie e fonti bibliografiche utili a chi conduce studi relativi alla storia inglese moderna (dal XV al XIX secolo).

Connected Histories brings together a range of digital resources related to early modern and nineteenth century Britain with a single federated search that allows sophisticated searching of names, places and dates, as well as the ability to save, connect and share resources within a personal workspace.

Il motore di ricerca è stato sviluppato dal Humanities Research Institute (HRI), Università di Sheffield. Il sito web è gestito dall’Institute of Historical Research di Londra. Si tratta di un progetto non-profit realizzato con il contributo del JISC.

  • London Lives 1690-1800: it provides a fully searchable edition of 240,000 manuscript pages from eight London archives and 15 datasets, giving access to 3.5 million names (free).
  • Origins.net: it offers online access to some of the richest ancestral information available. The collection searchable through Connected Histories focuses on the early modern history of London (banca dati a pagamento).
  • The Proceedings of Old Bailey Online, 1674-1913: it contains accounts of the trials conducted at London’s central criminal court between 1674 and 1913; and also the Ordinary’s Accounts – detailed narratives of the lives and deaths of convicts executed at Tyburn, published between 1676 and 1772 (free).

The History of Parliament Online è il sito collegato al monumentale progetto The History of Parliament, un’opera a stampa ancora in corso di lavorazione (28 i volumi finora pubblicati) che raccoglie tutta la documentazione relativa alla storia del Parlamento inglese, dal XIII secolo ai nostri giorni.

La versione online contiene più di 21.000 biografie e circa 3.000 documenti già pubblicati nella versione a stampa, oltre a materiali inediti (una raccolta di immagini + articoli introduttivi e di approfondimento che aiutano il lettore a focalizzare i concetti chiave e i principali eventi della storia parlamentare dell’Inghilterra).

The History of Parliament Online contains the 21,420 biographies and the 2,831 constituency surveys so far published by the History of Parliament. New material added for the online version includes a growing collection of images, some new introductory articles on individual parliaments, and interpretative articles on events and concepts of significance for parliamentary history.

The History of Parliament is a research project creating a comprehensive account of the parliamentary politics in England, then Britain, from their origins in the thirteenth century. Unparalleled in the comprehensiveness of its treatment, the History is generally regarded as one of the most ambitious, authoritative and well-researched projects in British history.

It consists of detailed studies of elections and electoral politics in each constituency, and of closely researched accounts of the lives of everyone who was elected to Parliament in the period, together with surveys drawing out the themes and discoveries of the research and adding information on the operation of Parliament as an institution.

Twenty-eight volumes covering eight periods have already been published. They deal with 1386-1421, 1509-1558, 1558-1603, 1660-1690, 1690-1715, 1715-1754, 1754-1790 and 1790-1820: in all about 20million words, 20,000 pages, 17,000 biographies, covering 281 years of parliamentary history.

With the exception of the 1690-1715 volumes published in 2002, the other twenty-three volumes with revisions and additional material were reissued in 1998 as a CD-ROM in collaboration with Cambridge University Press.

bpi1700: British Printed Images to 1700

Segnaliamo bpi1700, una bellissima collezione digitale di stampe, incisioni e illustrazioni prodotte in Inghilterra prima del 1700.

This website, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, makes available a database of thousands of prints and book illustrations from early modern Britain in fully-searchable form. It also offers ancillary facilities aimed to enhance users’ understanding and appreciation of the material it presents, such as various resources contextualising prints and printmaking, as well as original research on British prints to 1700.

The project began in April 2006, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) under their Resource Enhancement Scheme. Led by Professor Michael Hunter from the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Birkbeck, University of London, bpi1700 is a collaboration between Birkbeck and technical staff at the Centre for Computing in the Humanities at King’s College, London. The project has also involved the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, and the Department of Word and Image at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The core of the project is the database, a fully searchable library of several thousand printed images. The image records have been organized in such a way that copies and variations of the same print are gathered together within a single record (for further information on the rationale of the database, click here). Prints can be searched for by producer, by name of person depicted, and by subject, and it is possible to combine various search criteria. The subject search is based on a systematically organized thesaurus arranged by topic, based on and largely compatible with ICONCLASS (for further information see >>The subject index).

London Lives 1690-1800: vivere a Londra nel Settecento

London Lives 1690–1800: Crime, Poverty and Social Policy in the Metropolis è un progetto delle Università di Sheffield e Herefordshiren che rende disponibile l’edizione digitale di 240.000 manoscritti e consente di effettuare ricerche incrociate per gli oltre 3 milioni di nomi di persona citati nei singoli documenti.

Si tratta di una risorsa preziosa per gli studiosi di storia sociale perché offre uno spaccato della vita quotidiana dei ceti meno abbienti nella Londra del XVIII secolo e permette di ricostruire la biografia di uomini e donne altrimenti dimenticati dalla storia.

London Lives makes available, in a fully digitised and searchable form, a wide range of primary sources about eighteenth-century London, with a particular focus on plebeian Londoners. This resource includes over 240,000 manuscript and printed pages from eight London archives and is supplemented by fifteen datasets created by other projects. It provides access to historical records containing over 3.35 million name instances. Facilities are provided to allow users to link together records relating to the same individual, and to compile biographies of the best documented individuals.

Living The Poor Lives: documenti di archivio di epoca vittoriana

Il progetto inglese Living The Poor Lives, curato da The Nationial Archives, mette a disposizione in rete migliaia di documenti d’archivio di epoca vittoriana del Poor Law Board che aiutano a far luce sulle condizioni delle classi indigenti nell’Inghilterra del XIX secolo.

Thousands of pages of Victorian workhouse and poor law records have been made available online today following the conclusion of a major project by The National Archives.

Living the Poor Life involved more than 200 volunteers across the country, including local and family historians, researching and cataloguing 19th century records from the huge Ministry of Health archive (MH12).

The records comprise letters, reports and memos passed between local and national poor law authorities and help shed light on the lives and experiences of the Victorian poor.

You will see details of individual paupers, cases of neglect and cruelty, and workhouse staff as well as source material to study indoor and outdoor poor relief, education, building work, local politics and labour history, such as trade unions, Chartism and friendly societies. The material is very strong on public health and contains accounts of both physical and mental health matters.

Il sito A vision of Britain through time (1801-2001), realizzato dall’Università di Portsmouth, si basa sulle notizie fornite dal  Great Britain Historical Geographical Information System ed è una collezione digitale, unica nel suo genere, di informazioni e immagini che testimoniano i cambiamenti verificatesi nelle varie località della Gran Bretagna nel corso di due secoli, dal 1801 al 2001.
Le informazioni sono ricavate dai census reports, da giornali storici, diari di viaggio, mappe e carte geografiche e vengono messe a disposizione degli utenti attraverso un’interfaccia estremamente efficace che è di per sé un valore aggiunto rispetto alla semplice sommatoria delle moltissime notizie fornite.

Il sito può essere navigato facendo ricerche per luogo o per area tematica e copre per raggio d’interesse l’intero territorio britannico.

19th Century British Pamphlets: opuscoli inglesi dell’800 disponibili su JSTOR

Fino al 30 giugno 2009 sarà disponibile sulla banca dati JSTOR la preziosa raccolta di opuscoli ottocenteschi 19th Century British Pamphlets (accesso limitato solo su abbonamento: gli utenti della nostra biblioteca possono accedere dai pc connessi alla Rete di Ateneo dell’Università di Pisa).

I pamphlet rappresentavano un importante strumento di dibattito pubblico attraverso il quale venivano affrontati temi politici, sociali e scientifici di attualità.

Questa raccolta, curata dal consorzio RLUK (Research Libraries UK), contiene i più importanti pamphlet del XIX secolo conservati presso le biblioteche di ricerca del Regno Unito.

La digitalizzazione di oltre 20.000 opuscoli costituisce un prezioso corpus di fonti primarie che consentiranno a studiosi e ricercatori di approfondire il panorama socio-culturale dell’Inghilterra dell’Ottocento.

La raccolta è stata digitalizzata grazie ai finanziamenti del JISC Digitisation Programme.

The Cabinet Papers 1915-1978: documenti del governo britannico digitalizzati

Il Gabinetto del Regno Unito è il gruppo dei ministri che secondo una tradizione risalente nei secoli nell’ordinamento costituzionale coadiuvano il Primo ministro del Regno Unito. Del gabinetto fanno parte solo un numero ristretto di ministri che hanno il titolo di Segretari di Stato. Sempre per tradizione nel Gabinetto sono previsti anche un gruppo, ancor più ristretto di ministri senza portafoglio.

Il progetto The Cabinet Papers 1915-1978, promosso dal JISC e ospitato sul sito dell’Archivio nazionale britannico (National Archive), consente il libero accesso a migliaia di documenti ufficiali prodotti tra il 1915 e il 1978. La digitalizzazione dei microfilm conservati presso il National Archive consente di visualizzare e scaricare i documenti in formato PDF. Il sito, assai ben fatto, contiene anche molte informazioni di corredo sui principali avvenimenti che hanno segnato la vita politica inglese del Novecento.

“The Cabinet is the main body that controls policy and coordinates activities of governmental departments. It is chaired by the Prime Minister and consists of most of the ministerial heads of departments, as well as some additional members. During peacetime it typically consists of 20 members. During the two world wars the size of the Cabinet was reduced to enable rapid decision-making. It proceeds by joint discussion and decision-making, which requires collective responsibility for policy and outcomes. Members may therefore need to put aside departmental priorities and preferences to achieve coherence of overall policy. If a minister cannot agree to abide by collective decision, traditionally they have to resign.

The cabinet papers are a unique collection of conclusions and reference materials that detail the role of Cabinet and its history. 

Two world wars, unprecedented social change and rapid advances in technology had a radical transformative effect on both British society and the international community and, consequently, on the very governance of British life. All the core issues that faced the government of the day, all the various facets of British life, are documented in the minutes and memoranda of the Cabinet. Any study of Britain in the 20th century would be incomplete without reference to them but usage of this immensely important resource has been limited, up until now, to those who have the opportunity to visit the National Archive”.

Nineteenth-Century Serials Edition (ncse) è un progetto realizzato da alcune università britanniche in collaborazione con la British Library che consente di visualizzare e scaricare gratuitamente le riproduzioni facsimilari di sei pubblicazioni periodiche inglesi (quotidiani e riviste) pubblicate nel XIX secolo.

E’ stato messo a punto anche un prezioso data base interrogabile per parole chiave (funzione search) o per scorrimento liste (funzione browse) che indicizza nomi di persona, luoghi, nomi di istituzioni che compaiono negli articoli, oltre ai descrittori semantici che sono stati associati alle singole unità documentarie per facilitare i lettori nella ricerca di temi o argomenti specifici.

“Nineteenth-Century Serials Edition (ncse) is a free, online scholarly edition of six nineteenth-century periodicals and newspapers. It is a collaboration between Birkbeck, University of London, King’s College London (Centre for Computing in the Humanities and the Department of English), the British Library, and Olive Software.

This three year project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) seeks to publish and preserve selected 19th Century periodicals and newspapers. The records were chosen for digitisation not only for their individual significance, but also because they represent under researcher areas. They include significant weeklies and monthlies spanning a variety of subjects and readerships: Northern Star (mid-century; working-class); Monthly Repository and its supplement the Unitarian Chronicle (radical, middle-class, Unitarian); Leader (progressive, liberal, secular); English Woman’s Journal (mid-century, feminist); Tomahawk (satirical); Publishers’ Circular (print trade). By conceiving of multiple titles across the century as a single edition, it is hoped that it broadens the research reach of 19th Century historical research.

The edition is formed of two integrated components: the ‘Facsimile’ component – a repository of full-page facsimiles and textual transcripts generated through OCR; and the ‘Keyword’ component – an index of semantic keywords and person, place and institution names, generated using data mining and natural language processing techniques. Both components of the system are fully searchable and include rich, bibliographic metadata attached to titles, volumes, issues, departments and articles within the edition.

ncse includes full runs of the first five titles, and a decade only of the Publishers’ Circular. Titles are represented as completely as possible, including multiple editions, advertisements, wrappers, and supplements where we could find them.

All six journals are segmented to article level, and can be downloaded freely.

Il progetto britannico Films from the Home Front raccoglie una collezione di filmati che testimoniano la vita dei civili inglesi durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. Sono presenti filmati amatoriali, cinegiornali, documentari ufficiali.

I filmati sono stati suddivisi in 12 sezioni tematiche:

The Online Historical Population Reports (OHPR) fornisce libero accesso a censimenti e dati sulla popolazione di Gran Bretagna e Irlanda dal 1801 al 1937.

La collezione digitale è molto ricca e offre un’ampia gamma di documenti testuali e rilevamenti statistici per un’indagine della storia economica e sociale inglese del 19. e del 20. secolo attraverso l’analisi dei dati relativi a nascite, morti e matrimoni.

Le 200.000 pagine di censimenenti e registrazioni ufficiali sono integrate da numerosi documenti secondari conservati presso gli archivi nazionali inglesi, saggi critici e trascrizioni di importanti atti legislativi che aiutano a comprendere il contesto storico dei dati forniti.

La collezione può essere esplorata attraverso le funzioni di browsing o scorrimento liste (per data o per area geografica) o quelle di ricerca per parole chiave.

OHPR fa parte del JISC Digitisation programme ed è ospitato sul server dell’Università di Essex.

“The Online Historical Population Reports (OHPR) collection provides online access to the complete British population reports for Britain and Ireland from 1801 to 1937.

The collection goes far beyond the basic population reports with a wealth of textual and statistical material which provide an in-depth view of the economy, society (through births, deaths and marriages) and medicine during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

These 200,000 pages of census and registration material for the British Isles are supported by numerous ancillary documents from The National Archives, critical essays and transcriptions of important legislation which provide an aid to understanding the context, content and creation of the collection.

In digitising this resource the OHPR has enabled Browsing through the collection by date or geography, or Searching the content directly. Documents relating to the digitization and web development process may be accessed via the Project tab.
